New Soccer Turf Field Installation Nearing Complete: A Major Step Forward for Local Sports Community
August 3, 2025 – Canton, GA
After months of planning and months of hard work, the East Cherokee Soccer Club is proud to announce the successful installation of a brand-new, full-sized synthetic turf field—just in time for the Fall 2025 soccer season. The addition marks a significant milestone in the club’s growth and commitment to providing top-tier, safe facilities for youth athletes across our community.
The project began earlier this year following board approval and a series of fundraising efforts. The turf field replaces a previously underused grass area that often suffered from poor drainage and limited usability due to inclement weather. You may remember this, as the "Dirt Pit", as ECSC often called it.
1. Planning & Design:
The initial phase involved surveying the land, conducting soil and drainage tests, and designing the field layout, including orientation, dimensions, and safety zones. Coordination of volunteers, and You tube to ensure the site met industry standards for competitive play.
2. Site Preparation & Excavation:
Coach Wes and Coach Mike brought in the Ghel 1750RT and the Kubota L4701, right off of the farm to clear the area of vegetation, level the site, and remove existing topsoil. Over 120 truckloads of dirt were brought in to establish a stable subgrade. This foundation is critical for proper drainage and long-term durability.
3. Drainage Installation:
A subsurface drainage system was installed using 324 tons or drainage gravel (714,298 lbs.) and compacted using a 5" drum roller with vibration from the machines. This directs water away from the field, ensuring playability even after heavy rain. They also installed a series of swales around the sides of the field to ensure proper run-off of the playing surface.
4. Base Layer Construction:
A multi-layer crushed stone base was added and compacted to create a smooth, stable platform. Laser-guided grading equipment ensured precise slope and level specifications for proper water runoff.
5. Turf Roll Installation:
The synthetic turf, made of high-performance polyethylene fibers, was rolled out in large sections across the field. Each section was 15' wide and 120' long with an documented weight of 1,200 lbs. per roll. Each piece was carefully aligned, seamed, and glued using industrial-strength adhesives. Once in place they were nailed into the ground with 8" ring shank nails. Over 5,000 nails were installed on the field.
6. Infill Application:
Sand will be installed within the coming weeks. It spread evenly over the turf and brushed into the fibers. This infill layer provides cushioning, enhances traction, and keeps the turf blades standing upright.
7. Final Grooming & Quality Inspection:
Special grooming machines will be used to evenly distribute sand and lift the turf fibers. A final inspection will ensure the field meets performance, safety, and aesthetic standards.
8. Field Markings:
Permanent white were laid down to mark regulation soccer boundaries, goals, and center lines. Custom logos and field branding may be added to celebrate the club’s identity soon after the completion.
9. Perimeter & Amenities:
Fencing, netting, benches, and lighting are considered phase two and will be installed around the field to enhance safety and usability. To cap off the field, sod was installed along the entire perimeter of the pitch.
"This field isn’t just a surface—it's a game-changer," said Club President Mike Feeney. "It allows us to train and play year-round without worrying about muddy fields or cancellations. It’s also a huge boost for our Advanced Development Program and competitive teams."
The club plans to host training sessions, league games, and regional tournaments on the new field, bringing increased visibility and revenue to the area. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for early September, followed by a community celebration and inaugural match.
As the turf settles and players begin to take the field, it’s clear that this investment will pay dividends for years to come, supporting the club’s mission to develop youth athletes in a safe, high-quality environment.
